Lockout/tagout training program

Overview

In 2026, I worked with Walmart Canada’s corporate compliance team to develop a lockout/tagout training program for store Managers and Associates. This program was designed to provide lockout/tagout awareness for Associates and full instruction about how to complete the process for Managers.

  • Responsibilities: Instructional design, eLearning development, video development
  • Target Audience: Front-line Associates and Mangers at Walmart Canada stores
  • Tools Used: Articulate Rise, Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Year: 2026

Instructional Design

The content used to design this training was sourced from the Standard Operating Procedures for each type of powered equipment used in stores and Walmart’s Lockout/Tagout standard.

Using these documents, I wrote learning objectives to outline what learners needed to know after completing the training based on their role. We decided to design:

  • Two eLearning modules that included scenario-based formative assessments, interactive activities, and videos demonstrating the lockout/tagout process as well as a summative assessment that consisted of multiple choice and multiple answer questions.
  • A series of just-in-time learning videos accessible to Managers that need to complete lockout/tagout through a QR code on a sticker near each piece of powered equipment.

I also revised the standard operating procedure documents to include the updated lockout/tagout process, update the layout, and incorporate Walmart Canada’s brand colour pallet, fonts, and layout components.

For all of the videos used throughout the store and in the courses, I scripted the narration and storyboarded the content as well as filmed (with the assistance of a colleague) and edited the videos for English and French audiences.

eLearning Development

Since learners would be using both mobile and desktop to complete the modules, I used Articulate Rise to ensure they are fully responsive, regardless of the type of device learners are using.

I designed the images using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and edited the videos in Premiere Pro. Closed captions were added in Vimeo and the final Standard Operating Procedures were designed in MS PowerPoint and provided to the SMEs as accessible PDFs. QA testing was completed prior to launching the videos and the courses in the LMS.

I provided regular status updates for the stakeholders and SMEs involved, obtained sign-offs at each design and development stage, and delivered assets on schedule throughout the project.
